  1. Not sure why they posted this so many months after the fact, but the original report is quite a good read on renewables curtailment and I found their methodology quite convincing.

  2. “Miners are well distributed across the globe…”

    A few lines after

    “60% are in China”

    …priceless, lol.

I mean if we want an existential threat regarding Bitcoin, here’s one: concentrated mining which can be overtaken by hostile government agencies. Government agencies that actually dislike Bitcoin’s governance model/ideology…

  3. Though the percentage of renewable energy might be a good sounding argument at first, the total power consumption of the bitcoin network is still way to high. The bitcoin network was using 22 Twh in 2017, while Google was using just 5.7 Twh in the same year. Considering difficulty, an increasing number of new miners and the fact that climate change is not just using renewable energy sources but also opting for LESS power consumption, this news isn’t that great as it may seem first hand.

  4. Yup because energy is the main cost for big mining firms, and renewable energy is cheaper. I did some research and made a video on it!

  5. When people say bitcoin is a huge waste of electricity, it’s not. It’s actually leading the world toward renewable energy.

  6. In UK, there is a guy who built some wind turbines, got UK government green power subsidies, and now uses all the generated energy for mining bitcoins.

  7. Wonder how long it will take people to realise that renewable energy include burning biomass aka wood, which is less efficient than coal.

  11. I dont know where you live, but here in EU its cheaper to sell solar power and buy from grid “coal” power, because you will still make moneythanks to subsidies.
